     William John Legh, 1st Baron Newton was born on 19 December 1828.1 He was the son of William Legh and Mary Wilkinson.2 He married Emily Jane Wodehouse, daughter of Venerable Charles Nourse Wodehouse and Lady Dulcibella Jane Hay, on 29 May 1856 at St. George Hanover Square, London, EnglandG.3 He died on 15 December 1898 at age 69.1
     He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 21st Fusiliers.1 He fought in the Crimean War.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for South Lancashire between 1859 and 1865.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Lancashire Hussars.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for East Cheshire between 1868 and 1885.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Cheshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancasjire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Cheshire.1 He was created 1st Baron Legh, of Newton-in-Makerfield, co. Lancaster [U.K.] on 27 August 1892.1
