Lt.-Col. Sir James Cockburn of that Ilk, 3rd Bt. was the son of Sir William Cockburn of that Ilk, 2nd Bt. and Helen Lermonth.2 He married, firstly, Mary Rochead, daughter of Robert Rochead of Masterton, on 8 April 1764.1 He married, secondly, Phoebe Sharman after 1766.1 He died on 13 March 1780.1
Lt.-Col. Sir James Cockburn of that Ilk, 3rd Bt. succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Cockburn [N.S., 1704] circa January 1751.1 On 15 December 1757 he sold Langton and the office of Usher.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1760 in the service of the 48th Foot at Quebec.1 He had three sons by his second wife, who all died without issue.

Mary Rochead was the daughter of Robert Rochead of Masterton.2 She married Lt.-Col. Sir James Cockburn of that Ilk, 3rd Bt., son of Sir William Cockburn of that Ilk, 2nd Bt. and Helen Lermonth, on 8 April 1764.1 She died on 5 September 1766.1
