Cecil Frances Humphreys was the daughter of Major John Humphreys.1 She married Most Rev. Sir William Alexander, son of Reverend Robert Alexander and Dorothea McClintock, on 15 October 1850.1 She died on 12 October 1895.1
From 15 October 1850, her married name became Alexander.1 She was a celebrated hymn writer, author of Hymns for Little Children (1848), which included, among many others, "There is a green hill far away", "Once in royal David's city" and "All things bright and beautiful". She also wrote the well-known adaptation of the ancient hymn St. Patrick's Breastplate ("I bind unto myself to-day").1
