Samuel Allen was born on 22 July 1842.1 He was the son of Henry Ellis Allen and Jane Rogan.1 He married Florence Mary Adair, daughter of General Sir Charles William Adair, on 15 January 1890.1 He died on 1 July 1919 at age 76.1
He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1 He graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1872 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was a practising Barrister-at-law.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1885.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Antrim in 1886.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Antrim.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Antrim.1 He lived at Lisconnan, Dervock, County Antrim, Ireland.1
