     John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon was born on 4 June 1751.1 He was the son of William Scott and Jane Atkinson.1 He married Elizabeth Surtees, daughter of Aubone Surtees and Elizabeth Stephenson, on 19 November 1772.1 He died on 13 January 1838 at age 86.1
     He was educated at Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, EnglandG.1 He was educated in 1770 at University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He graduated from University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1773 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1776 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1783.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Weobley between 1783 and 1796.1 He was appointed Knight in 1788.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General in 1788.1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) in 1792.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1793.1 He held the office of Attorney-General between 1793 and 1799.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Boroughbridge between 1796 and 1799.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1799.1 He was created 1st Baron Eldon, of Eldon, co. Durham [Great Britain] on 18 July 1799.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1801.1 He held the office of High Steward of University College, Oxford University between 1801 and 1838.1 He was created 1st Earl of Eldon, co. Durham [U.K.] on 7 July 1821.1 He was created 1st Viscount Encombe, of Encombe, co. Dorset [U.K.] on 7 July 1821.1
