Sir John Shelley-Sydney, 1st Bt. was born on 18 December 1771. He was the son of Sir Bysshe Shelley, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Jane Perry. He married Henrietta Hunloke, daughter of Sir Henry Hunloke, 4th Bt. and Margaret Coke, on 29 April 1799. He died on 14 March 1849 at age 77.

Henrietta Hunloke was the daughter of Sir Henry Hunloke, 4th Bt. and Margaret Coke. She married Sir John Shelley-Sydney, 1st Bt., son of Sir Bysshe Shelley, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Jane Perry, on 29 April 1799. She died on 5 February 1811.
