William Harry Verelst Darell was born on 23 January 1878 at Fretherne House, Gloucestershire, England.1,2 He was the son of Sir Lionel Edward Darell, 5th Bt. and Helen Frances Marshland.3 He married Eva Jeffie Bainbridge, daughter of Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge and Eliza Jefferson Armstrong, on 26 October 1907 at St. George Hanover Square, London, England.1,2 He died on 7 February 1954 at age 76.1
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.3 He was educated in 1897 at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG, where he was awarded the Sword of Honour.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.3 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches five times.3 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1915.1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.3 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1918.1 He was awarded the Commander, Order Mérite Agricole.3 He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Irish Guards.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in the Coldstream Guards.3 He gained the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General in 1929.3 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1929.1
