     Joseph Johnston, 1st of Hilton was born circa 1601.2 He is the son of Archibald Johnston and Rachel Arnot.3 He married Sophia Hume, daughter of Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth and Julian Kerr.2 He died circa 1638.2
     He lived at Hilton, Berwickshire, Scotland.1 His last will was dated 1638.3
