     Richard Horatio Townshend was born on 9 July 1838.1 He was the son of Samuel Philip Townshend and Frances Helena Newman.2 He married Frances Maria Maunsell, daughter of William Hare Maunsell, in 1868.1 He died in 1879,.1
     Richard Horatio Townshend gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 31st East Surrey Regiment.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, in 1860 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He lived at Garrycloyne Castle, Blarney, County Cork, Ireland.1
