Major Charles David Cunynghame Ellis was born on 25 July 1833.2 He was the son of Lt.-Col. Hon. Augustus Frederick Ellis and Mary Frances Thurlow Cunynghame. He married Emily Campbell, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir Guy Campbell, 1st Bt. and Pamela FitzGerald, on 17 November 1859.1 He died on 5 December 1906 at age 73.2
He was Major 60th Rifles Kaffir –53, Crimea 1855–56 and in India 1858–59 (three medals) War 1851.2 He gained the rank of Major in the service of the 60th Rifles.1 He lived at Branksome Chine House, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.1
