James Macnab Cuningham was born on 2 June 1829.¹ He was the son of William Cuningham and Rebecca Armstrong.² He married, firstly, Mary Falconer McRae, daughter of James McRae, on 2 March 1854.¹ He married, secondly, Georgina Macredie, daughter of Robert Reid Macredie, on 11 April 1889.¹ He died on 25 June 1905 at age 76.¹
     He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.).¹ He graduated with a Doctor of Law (LL.D.).¹ He was Surgeon-General of the Indian Medical Service.¹ He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Holy Sepulchre (K.H.S.).¹ He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.).¹
