     He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England.1 He graduated from Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1927 entitled to practice as a barrister.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the North Rising, Yorkshire.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Sunderland between 1935 and 1945.1 He held the office of a Junior Lord of the Treasury between 1938 and 1940.1 He gained the rank of Major in the service of the London Irish Rifles.1 He was a director of the Furness Shipbuilding Company.1
