He married Clara Baronin von Meyern-Hohenberg on 20 August 1936 at Bartenstein. He died on 7 May 1950 at age 44 at Unterbalbach, Germany.

He married Franziska Romana Theresia Notger Prinzessin zu Oettingen und Oettingen-Spielberg, daughter of Alois 10th Fürst zu Oettingen und Oettingen-Spielberg and Elisabeth Gräfin zu Lynar, on 8 January 1971 at Öttingen, Germany, in a civil marriage. They were remarried in a religious ceremony on 19 January 1971.
     Ferdinand Michael IX Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Bartenstein was baptised with the name of Ferdinand Michael Carl Emich Peter Philipp Johannes. He succeeded to the title of 9th Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Bartenstein in 1950.
