     John Augustus James Johnstone was born on 3 May 1847.1 He was the son of James Johnstone of Alva and Hon. Augusta Anne Norton.2 He married Emily Crossling, daughter of R. W. Crossling, in May 1868.1 He died on 1 April 1890 at age 42, without issue.1
     He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.).1 He lived at Alva, Clackmannanshire, Scotland.1
