     Colonel Edward Hugh Bethell was born in 1854 at Rise, Yorkshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of William Frogatt Bethell.1 He married, firstly, Gertrude Hill, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Eustace George Hill and Cecilia Wheatley Eliott, on 15 December 1881 at Aurangabad, Madras, IndiaG.1 He married, secondly, Annie Lonsdale, daughter of John Gylby Lonsdale and Sarah Martineau Jardine, in 1890 at Lichfield, Staffordshire, EnglandG.1
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Engineers.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)1

     Maj.-Gen. Hugh Keppel Bethell also went by the nick-name of Beetle.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918.1 He was Commander of the 1 Northamptonshire Regiment, Western Front between 1915 and 1916.1 He was Commander of the 74 Brigade, 25 Division, Western Front between 1917 and 1918.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)1 He was Commander of the 66 Division between 1918 and 1919.1 He was Military Attaché to Washington between 1919 and 1923.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 7th Queen's Own Hussars.1 He was Commander of the 2 Rhine Brigade, British Army on the Rhine between 1924 and 1928.1 He was Brigadier of the Northern Command, India between 1928 and 1930.1 He was Commander of the Presidency and Assam District, India between 1930 and 1934.1
