     Richard Farrer Herschell, 2nd Baron Herschell of the City Durban was born on 22 May 1878.¹ He was the son of Farrar Herschell, 1st Baron Herschell of the City Durban and Agnes Adela Porcher.¹ He married Annie Vera Violet Nicolson, daughter of Sir Arthur Thomas Bennett Robert Nicolson of that Ilk and Lasswade, 10th Bt., on 1 November 1919.¹ He died on 14 October 1929 at age 51.¹
     He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Herschell of the City of Durban [U.K., 1886] on 1 March 1899.¹ He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.¹ He was Private Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland between 1905 and 1907.¹ He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting between 1907 and 1910.¹ He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting between 1910 and 1919.¹ He fought in the First World War.¹ He was decorated with the award of the Legion of Honour.¹ He was decorated with the award of the Knight Grand Cross, Order of Dannebrog of Denmark.¹ He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.).¹ He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting between 1924 and 1929.¹

     Agnes Adela Porcher was the daughter of Edward Leigh Kindersley Porcher.¹ She married Farrar Herschell, 1st Baron Herschell of the City Durban, son of Reverend Ridley Henry Herschell and Helen Mowbray, on 20 December 1876.¹ She died on 23 February 1902.¹
      From 20 December 1876, her married name became Herschell.¹ As a result of her marriage, Agnes Adela Porcher was styled as Baroness Herschell of the City of Durban on 8 February 1886.

     Helen Mowbray Herschell was born on 20 June 1879.¹ She was the daughter of Farrar Herschell, 1st Baron Herschell of the City Durban and Agnes Adela Porcher.¹ She died on 30 November 1879.¹
