Richard Farrer Herschell, 2nd Baron Herschell of the City Durban was born on 22 May 1878.1 He was the son of Farrar Herschell, 1st Baron Herschell of the City Durban and Agnes Adela Porcher.1 He married Annie Vera Violet Nicolson, daughter of Sir Arthur Thomas Bennett Robert Nicolson of that Ilk and Lasswade, 10th Bt., on 1 November 1919.1 He died on 14 October 1929 at age 51.1
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Herschell of the City of Durban [U.K., 1886] on 1 March 1899.1 He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.1 He was Private Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland between 1905 and 1907.1 He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting between 1907 and 1910.1 He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting between 1910 and 1919.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was decorated with the award of the Legion of Honour.1 He was decorated with the award of the Knight Grand Cross, Order of Dannebrog of Denmark.1 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.).1 He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting between 1924 and 1929.1

Agnes Adela Porcher was the daughter of Edward Leigh Kindersley Porcher.1 She married Farrar Herschell, 1st Baron Herschell of the City Durban, son of Reverend Ridley Henry Herschell and Helen Mowbray, on 20 December 1876.1 She died on 23 February 1902.1
From 20 December 1876, her married name became Herschell.1 As a result of her marriage, Agnes Adela Porcher was styled as Baroness Herschell of the City of Durban on 8 February 1886.
