     Alan Frederick Cathcart, 3rd Earl Cathcart was born on 14 November 1828 at Hythe, Kent, EnglandG.1 He was the son of General Charles Murray Cathcart, 2nd Earl Cathcart and Henrietta Mather.2 He married Elizabeth Mary Crompton, daughter of Sir Samuel Crompton, 1st Bt. and Isabella Sophia Cathcart, on 2 April 1850 at Thornton le Street, Yorkshire, EnglandG.1 He died on 30 October 1905 at age 76.3
     He was educated at Scottish Military Academy, ScotlandG.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1845 in the 23rd Foot.1 He gained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1848.1 He retired from the military in 1850.1 He was awarded the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers' Decoration (V.D.)3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) for the North Riding, Yorkshire.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Cathcart, of Cathcart, co. Renfrew [U.K., 1807] on 16 July 1859.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl Cathcart [U.K., 1814] on 16 July 1859.3 He succeeded as the 12th Lord Cathcart [S., c. 1452] on 16 July 1859.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Greenock, of Greenock, co.
