     Alan Frederick Cathcart, 3rd Earl Cathcart was born on 14 November 1828 at Hythe, Kent, England.2 He was the son of General Sir Charles Murray Cathcart, 2nd Earl Cathcart and Henrietta Mather.1 He married Elizabeth Mary Crompton, daughter of Sir Samuel Crompton, 1st Bt. and Isabella Sophia Cathcart, on 2 April 1850 at Thornton le Street, Yorkshire, England.2 He died on 30 October 1905 at age 76.3
     Alan Frederick Cathcart, 3rd Earl Cathcart was educated at Scttish Military Academy, Scotland.2 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1845 in the service of the 23rd Foot.2 He gained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1848.2 He retired from the military in 1850.2 He was decorated with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers' Decoration (V.D.).3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the North Riding, Yorkshire.3 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Greenock, of Greenock, co. Renfrew [U.K., 1807] on 16 July 1859.4 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Cathcart, of Cathcart, co. Renfrew [U.K., 1807] on 16 July 1859.4 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl Cathcart [U.K., 1814] on 16 July 1859.4 He succeeded to the title of 12th Lord Cathcart [S., c. 1452] on 16 July 1859.4 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the service of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.3 He held the office of President of the Agricultural Society in 1873.2 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3
