     Johan van Zyl Steyn, Baron Steyn was born on 14 August 1932 at Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.1 He married, firstly, Jean Pollard.2 He and Jean Pollard were divorced.2 He married, secondly, Susan Leonore Lewis in 1977.1 He died on 28 November 2017 at age 85.1
     He was educated at Jan van Riebeck School, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.2 He graduated from University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, Cape Province, South Africa, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1,2 He graduated from University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, Cape Province, South Africa, with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)2 He graduated from University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was a practising barrister in 1958 at South Africa.2 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1979.2 He held the office of Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1985.2 He held the office of High Court Judge of the Queen's Bench between 1985 and 1991.2 He held the office of Judge of the North Circuit between 1989 and 1991.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1992.1 He held the office of Lord Justice of Appeal between 1992 and 1995.2 He was created Baron Steyn, of Swafield in the county of Norfolk [U.K. Law Lord] in 1995.1 He held the office of Lord of Appeal in Ordinary between 1995 and 2005.1
