     Lt.-Col. John Anthony Dene was born on 6 June 1912 at Bodmin, Cornwall, England.2 He is the son of Colonel Arthur Pollard Dene and Elsie Beatrice Yvonne Koe.1,2 He married, firstly, Mary Anson, daughter of Claud Ronald Anson and Frederica Heath Harrison, on 22 February 1940 at Westminster, London, England.1,2 He and Mary Anson were divorced in 1960.1 He married, secondly, Judith A. Ramsden in 1960 at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England.2
     He fought in the Second World War, when he became a POW in 1944.2 He was Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion, parachute Regiment between 1943 and 1944.2 He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Royal Regiment).1
