James Maitland, 9th Earl of Lauderdale was born on 12 May 1784.2 He was the son of Sir James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale and Eleanor Todd.1 He died on 22 August 1860 at age 76 at Thirlestane Castle, Lauder, Berwickshire, Scotland, unmarried.3
James Maitland, 9th Earl of Lauderdale was educated at Eton College, Eton, Berkshire, England.2 He was educated at University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Camelford between 1806 and 1807.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Richmond between 1818 and 1820.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Appleby between 1826 and 1832.2 He succeeded to the title of 9th Earl of Lauderdale on 15 September 1839. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Lauderdale, of Thirlestane, co. Berwick [U.K., 1806] on 15 September 1839.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Berwickshire between 1841 and 1860.2

He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Lauderdale, of Thirlestane, co. Berwick [U.K., 1806] on 22 August 1860.1 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1862.1 He gained the rank of Admiral of the Red in 1862 in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the O'Byrne's Naval Biography.2

General Hon. William Mordaunt Maitland was the son of James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale and Mary Lombe. He married, firstly, Mary Orpen, daughter of Reverend Richard Orpen. He married, secondly, Jane Walker, daughter of Reverend Thomas Walker, on 5 June 1819. He died on 24 June 1841.

Admiral Thomas Maitland, 11th Earl of Lauderdale was born on 3 February 1803. He was the son of General Hon. William Mordaunt Maitland and Mary Orpen. He married Amelia Young in 1828. He died on 1 September 1878 at age 75.
