     Major John Hargreaves Elwes was born on 11 January 1906. He was the son of Henry Cecil Elwes and Muriel Hargreaves. He married Isabel Pamela Ivy Beckwith, daughter of Major William Malebisse Beckwith and Lady Muriel Beatrice Gordon-Lennox, on 6 December 1934. He died on 18 March 1943 at age 37 at Mareth, Tunisia, killed in action.1
     Major John Hargreaves Elwes gained the rank of Major in the service of the Scots Guards.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was decorated with the Military Cross (M.C.).1
