George IV Hanover, King of the United Kingdom was born on 12 August 1762 at St. James's Palace, St. James's, London, England.1 He was the son of George III Hanover, King of Great Britain and Sophie Charlotte Herzogin von Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He was baptised on 8 September 1762. He married, firstly, Maria Anne Smythe, daughter of Walter Smythe and Mary Errington, on 15 September 1785 at Park Lane, Mayfair, London, England, in a private marriage, and in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772.1 He married, secondly, Karoline Amelie Elisabeth Prinzessin von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, daughter of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Herzog von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and Augusta Hanover, Princess Royal of Great Britain and Ireland, on 8 April 1795 at St. James's Palace, Chapel Royal, St. James's, London, England.1 He died on 26 June 1830 at age 67 at Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, England, from internal bleeding and liver damage.2 He was buried on 15 July 1830.2
George IV Hanover, King of the United Kingdom was baptised with the name of George Augustus Frederick. He gained the title of Earl of Carrick on 12 August 1762.1 He gained the title of Baron Renfrew on 12 August 1762.1 He gained the title of Lord of the Isles on 12 August 1762.1 He gained the title of Duke of Rothesay on 12 August 1762.1 He gained the title of Duke of Cornwall on 12 August 1762.1 He was created 1st Earl of Chester [Great Britain] on 17 August 1762.1 He was created HRH Prince of Wales [Great Britain] on 17 August 1762.1 He gained the title of Prince Regent of the United Kingdom on 5 February 1811.1 George IV Hanover, King of the United Kingdom also went by the nick-name of Prinny. He succeeded to the title of King George IV of the United Kingdom on 29 January 1820.3 He and Elizabeth Denison were associated before 1821.4 He was crowned King of the United Kingdom on 19 July 1821 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England, and styled 'By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and ireland, King, Defender of the Failth.3'
In 1831 He made a morganatic marriage to the Catholic Mrs Fitzherbert in 1784. As this marriage was without his father's permission and to a Catholic, the union was illegal under British law and annulled. In 1795, he married his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick, and had one child by her, Princess Charlotte, but she died in 1817. When young, George was handsome and polished but it would seem he was bored with his life and quickly degenerated into a grossly fat debauchee. He loathed Caroline and she was indeed repulsive, being fat, ugly and dirty. It is likely she committed adultery in Italy and the government introduced a Bill to deprive her of the title of Queen but the Bill was withdrawn. She was refused access to Westminster Abbey when George was crowned. George together with his friend Beau Brummell were leaders in fashion, and he commissioned Brighton Pavilion and helped make seaside resorts popular. George's lazy, profligate life damaged the monarchy's moral influence, but his intelligent patronage fostered painting, literature and Regency architecture. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.5
