     Somerset Arthur Butler, 5th Earl of Carrick was born on 30 January 1835 at Roan More, County Waterford, Ireland.3 He was the son of Somerset Richard Butler, 3rd Earl of Carrick and Lucy French.2 He died on 22 December 1901 at age 66 at Coorheam House, Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland, unmarried.3
     Somerset Arthur Butler, 5th Earl of Carrick was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England.3 He succeeded to the title of 12th Viscount Ikerrin, co. Tipperary [I., 1629] on 16 April 1846.1 He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Carrick, co. Tipperary [I., 1748] on 16 April 1846.1 He was commissioned in 1853.3 He fought in the Crimean War.3 He gained the rank of Captain in 1856 in the service of the Grenadier Guards.3
