     But externally at least the mansion owes more to Barry than to the architect of St Pancras and the Albert Memorial – Scott's best known secular creations. Despite having been described as the ultimate in high Victorian.¹ In 1830 Highclere is not strictly speaking of that era but a little before. The point is more than just pedantic. When Barry set about his designs for Highclere back in the s (though it is true that the actual physical remodelling did not begin till 1841).¹
