     James Ashton was born on 2 July 1809 at Pole Bank, Gee Cross, Hyde, Cheshire, England.1 He was the son of Samuel Ashton and Mary Turner.1 He married, firstly, Eliza Bayley on 1 October 1834 at Stockport, Cheshire, England.1 He married, secondly, Frances Caroline Cheetham in 1846 at Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire, England. He died on 6 November 1866 at age 57.1
     James Ashton was a cotton manufaturer.1 He lived at Highfield, Bredbury, Minwood, Hertfordshire, England.1
