Sir John Johnstone, 1st Bt. was the son of Sir James Johnstone of Westerhall and Margaret Bannatyne.2 He married Agnes Dalzell, daughter of Sir John Dalzell, 2nd Bt. and Harriet Murray.1 He married Rachel Johnston, daughter of James Johnston of Sheens.3 He died on 30 September 1711.1
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Kerr's Dragoons.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries Sheriffdom [Scotland] between 1700 and 1707.3 He was created 1st Baronet Johnstone, of Westerhall [Nova Scotia] on 25 April 1700, with a special remainder to his brother.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries Sheriffdom from 1707 to 1708.3
