     Maj.-Gen. Charles Stuart Lane was born on 9 February 1831.1 He was the son of Richard Lane and Sarah Pink Tracey.1 He married Anne Josephine Boyes on 23 September 1852.1
     Maj.-Gen. Charles Stuart Lane fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1862 in the service of the Bengal Staff Corps.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.).1 He fought in the Afghan War between 1878 and 1879.1
