     William Mackenzie, 5th Earl of Seaforth was the son of Sir Kenneth Mackenzie, 4th Earl of Seaforth and Lady Frances Herbert.1 He married Mary Kennet, daughter of Nicholas Kennet, on 22 April 1715.1 He died on 8 January 1740.1
     William Mackenzie, 5th Earl of Seaforth succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Mackenzie of Kintail [S., 1609] in January 1700/1.1 He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Seaforth [S., 1623] in January 1700/1.1 In March 1707/8 at Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, he was imprisoned on suspicion of involvement with the aborted French/Jacobite invasion of Scotland.1 He fought in the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 November 1715, where he lead 3000 men for the Jacobites.1 Circa December 1715 He was appointed the Jacobite Lieutenant-Governor of the Northern Counties.1 In 1716 he was attainted and his titles and estates forfeited.1 In July 1716 he fled to France.1 Before December 1716 he was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) by the Old Pretender.1 He fought in the Battle of Glenshiel on 10 June 1719, where he was wounded in another failed Jacobite uprising.1 In 1726 he was pardoned of all personal punishments by the British Government.1 In 1736 his diasabilities under his attainder were removed by Act of Parliament, although his titles remained forfeit.1
