     Michael Peter Leopold Hamburger was born on 22 March 1924.1 He was the son of Richard Hamburger and L. Hamburg.2 He married Anne Ellen File in 1951.1 He died on 7 June 2007 at age 83 at Saxmundham, Suffolk, England.3
     He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was an assistant German lecturer between 1952 and 1955 at University College London, London, EnglandG.1 He was Lecturer then Reader of German between 1955 and 1964 at Reading University, Reading, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was Reader of German between 1966 and 1967 at Mt. Holyoke College, Massachusetts, U.S.A.G.1 He was a Lecturer in 1973 at University of California San Diego, San Diego, California, U.S.A.G.1 He was Visiting Professor between 1975 and 1977 at Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.G.1 He was translator of many German poems, and poet.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1992.1 He lived in 1999 at Marsh Acres, Middleton, Suffolk, EnglandG.1 He has a son and two daughters.1

     From 1940, her married name became Harmar-Nicholls. After her marriage, Dorothy Elsie Edwards was styled as Lady Harmar-Nicholls on 10 January 1975.
