Robert Makgill, 2nd Viscount of Oxfuird was born on 20 May 1651.1 He is the son of James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird and Christian Livingston.2 He married, firstly, Lady Henrietta Livingston, daughter of George Livingstone, 3rd Earl of Linlithgow, in July 1666.1 He married, secondly, Lady Jean Ramsay, daughter of George Ramsay, 2nd Earl of Dalhousie and Lady Anne Fleming, circa 26 December 1684.3 He married Lady Jean Ramsay, daughter of George Ramsay, 2nd Earl of Dalhousie and Lady Anne Fleming, circa 26 December 1684.1 He died in December 1705 at age 54, without surviving male issue.1
Robert Makgill, 2nd Viscount of Oxfuird succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Makgill [N.S., 1627] on 5 May 1663.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Makgill of Cousland [S., 1651] on 5 May 1663.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Oxfuird [S., 1651] on 5 May 1663.1 In July 1689 he was incarcerated in Edinburgh Castle and the following month discharged but banned from Edinburgh for eight years and eventually placed under house arrest at Cranston Riddell, all for for conspiring as a Jacobite.1 On his death, his peerages became dormant.1
