George Playfair was born on 4 January 1782.2 He was the son of Reverend James Playfair and Margaret Lyon.1 He married Janet Ross, daughter of John Ross, on 8 November 1814.2 He died on 26 November 1846 at age 64.2
George Playfair graduated from St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland, with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.).2 He was Chief Inspector General of Hospitals at Bengal, India.2

Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair was born on 20 February 1787.1 He was the son of Reverend James Playfair and Margaret Lyon.1 He married Jane Dalgelish, daughter of William Dalgelish, on 10 July 1809.1 He died on 19 January 1861 at age 73.1
Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.1 He was commissioned in 1804, in the service of the Bengal Horse Artillery.1 He retired from the military in 1834.1 He was the Provost between 1842 and 1861 at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.1 He was invested as a Knight Bachelor in 1856.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland, in 1856.1 He revived the Roal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews.1
