Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst of Bathurst matriculated at Christ Church College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 22 April 1779.1 He held the office of a Lord of the Admiralty between 1783 and 1789.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Cirencester between 1783 and 1793.1 He held the office of a Lord of the Treasury between 1789 and 1791.1 He held the office of Teller of the Exchequer between 1790 and 1834.1 He held the office of Commissioner of the India Board between 1793 and 1802.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 21 June 1793.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Apsley, Baron of Apsley, Sussex [G.B., 1771] on 6 August 1794.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Bathurst of Battlesden, co. Lord Greville recorded that "he was a very amiable man and with a good understanding, though his talents were from brilliant. A High Churchman and a High Tory, bu t a cool politician, a bad speaker, a good writer, greatly averse to changes but unwillingly acquiescing in many. He was nervous and reserved, with a good deal of humour, and habitually a jester."3 According to Gibbs, "Lady Louisa Stuart says that he was the last man to wear a pigtail, and that in 1828 he cut it off, and sent it round in an official box to his ministerial collegues."3
