     Colonel David Alexander Somerville Cranstoun of that Ilk and Corehouse was born on 19 December 1943 at British Embassy, Washington, D.C., U.S.A..1 He is the son of Major John Gilbert Lockhart and Margaret Colette Mary Gordon.2 He married Maja Martha Glattli, daughter of Professor Hugo Glattli, on 31 May 1991.1
     Colonel David Alexander Somerville Cranstoun of that Ilk and Corehouse was baptised with the name of David Alexander Somerville Lockhart.1 He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was commissioned in 1964, in the service of the Queen's Own Lowland Highlanders.1 He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, with a Master of Science (M.Sc.).1 He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).1 He was a cereal specialist with the Scientific Advisory Committee.1 He was admitted to Royal Company of Archers in 1973.1 He was director of Scottish Quality Cereals.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1982.1 He was decorated with the award of Territorial Decoration (T.D.).1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1990.1 On 12 September 1991 his name was legally changed to David Alexander Somerville Cranstoun of that Ilk and Corehouse.1 He was recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Office on 12 September 1991.1 He held the position of Chief of the Name and Arms of Cranstoun on 12 September 1991.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lanarkshire in 1992.1 He retired from the military in 1993, with the rank of Territorial Army Colonel, late of the Lowlands.1 He was chairman of the Scottish Society of Crop Research between 1997 and 2001.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in 2001 in the service of the Glasgow and Lanarks Battalion, Army Cadet Force.1 He lived in 2003 at 3 Wilton Road, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1
