Sir Hugh Thomas Dyke Acland was born on 10 September 1874 at Christchurch, New Zealand.1,2 He was the son of John Barton Arundell Acland and Emily Weddell Harper.1 He married Evelyn Mary Evans, daughter of John Lindsay Evans, on 15 April 1903 at New Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England.1,2 He died on 15 April 1956 at age 81 at Chippenham, Browns Road, St. Albans, Christchurch, New Zealand.1,2 He was buried at Mount Peel Cemetery, Mount Peel, Canterbury, New Zealand.2
Sir Hugh Thomas Dyke Acland was educated between 1885 and 1893 at Christ's College, Christchurch, New Zealand.2 He was educated in 1893 at Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand.2 He was educated in 1894 at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, England.2 He was registered as a Licentiate, Royal College of Physicians (L.R.C.P.) in 1898.1,2 He gained the rank of civil surgeon in 1900 in the service of the Royal Army Medical Corps.2 He fought in the Boer War from 1900 to 1901.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1914 in the service of the Royal Army Medical Corps.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1917.1 He was invested as a Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1919.1 He was invested as a Knight in 1933.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal College of Surgeons (F.R.C.S.).1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the New Zealand Army Medical Corps Reserve Officers.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.2
