Field Marshal Archibald Percival Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell was born on 5 May 1883.1 He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Archibald Graham Wavell and Lillie Percival.2,3 He married Eugenie Marie Quirk, daughter of Colonel J. O. Quirk, on 22 April 1915.3 He died on 24 May 1950 at age 67.1
He fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902.3 He was commissioned on 8 May 1901, in the service of the Black Watch.3 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.3 He was decorated with the award of the Military Cross (M.C.).4 He was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.4 He was Commander of the 6th Infantry Brigade, Aldershot between 1930 and 1934.3 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1935.3 He was Commander of the 2nd Division, Aldershot between 1935 and 1937.3 He fought in the Palestine Campaign between 1937 and 1938.3 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1939.3 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Middle East between 1939 and 1941.3 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1943.3 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1941.4 He was Commander-in-Chief of the India between 1941 and 1943.3 He was Supreme Commander of the South-West Pacific Area in 1942.3 He held the office of Viceroy and Governor-General of India between 1943 and 1947.3 He was created 1st Viscount Wavell, of Cyrenaica, and of Winchester, co.
