David Simon St. Clair-Erskine was born on 18 November 1917. He is the son of James Francis Harry St. Clair-Erskine, 5th Earl of Rosslyn and Vera Mary Bayley. He married Antonia Mary Kelly, daughter of Admiral Sir John Donald Kelly, on 5 March 1948. He and Antonia Mary Kelly were divorced in 1958.
