Sir John Ramsay, 1st and last Lord Bothwell was born before 1464. He was the son of John Ramsay and Janet Napier.1 He married, firstly, Janet Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy, 2nd Lord Kennedy and Lady Elizabeth Gordon, circa 6 November 1505.1 He and Janet Kennedy were divorced.1 He married, secondly, Isobel Livingston before 15 February 1507/8.1 He died on 9 September 1513 at Flodden Field, Northumberland, England, killed in action.1
He was attached to the court of King James III of Scotland. In July 1482 he escaped execution at Lauder, one of only a few of the King's attendants to do so.1 He was created 1st Lord Bothwell [Scotland] before 9 May 1485.1 He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to England between 1486 and 1488.1 On 8 October 1488 he was forfeited, after being prosecuted by his successor as Ambassador to England.1 He took refuge in England, acting as a spy for King Henry VII, and plotted to deliver the Scottish King to Henry.1 On 18 April 1497 he was rehabilitated under the Great Seal, although not restored to his peerage, nor to some of his estates.1 On 13 May 1510 lands in Kincardineshire, called the Barony of Blamain, were erected into a free baorny for him and his successors.1 He lived at Trarinzean, Scotland.2 He fought in the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513.1
