     Lt.-Col. John Towneley was born on 16 February 1806.1 He was the son of Peregrine Edward Towneley and Charlotte Theresa Drummond.2 He married Lucy Ellen Tichborne, daughter of Sir Henry Joseph Tichborne, 8th Bt. and Anne Burke, on 28 October 1840.1 He died on 21 February 1878 at age 72.1
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 5th Loyal Lancashire Militia.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Beverley between 1841 and 1852.1 He lived at Towneley, Lancashire, England.1
