     James Murray, Lord Philiphaugh was born in 1655. He was the son of Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh and Anne Douglas. He married, secondly, Margaret Don, daughter of Sir Alexander Don of Newton Don, 1st Bt. and Isabella Smith of Duns. He married, firstly, Anne Hepburn, daughter of Sir Patrick Hepburn of Blackcastle.1 He died on 1 July 1708 at Inch.
     He held the office of Lord of Session on 28 October 1689. He was styled as Lord Philiphaugh [Scottish Law Lord] on 28 October 1689.1 He held the office of Sheriff of Selkirk.1 He held the office of Lord Clerk Register [Scotland] on 21 November 1702.
