Lt.-Col. Hugh Granville Leveson Dudley Ryder was born on 26 January 1900. He is the son of Reverend Algernon Charles Dudley Ryder and Constance Eugenia Smith. He married, firstly, Diana Vivian Makins, daughter of Sir Paul Augustine Makins, 2nd Bt. and Gladys Marie Vivian, on 2 March 1926.1 He married, secondly, Patricia Geraldine Browne, daughter of Gerald Macleay Browne, on 12 June 1955.

Reverend Algernon Charles Dudley Ryder was born on 14 February 1847. He was the son of Frederick Dudley Ryder and Marian Charlotte Emily Cockayne. He married Constance Eugenia Smith, daughter of Rowland Smith, on 5 July 1889. He died on 19 January 1943 at age 95.
