Lt.-Col. Bernard Edward Ward was born on 9 January 1827.1 He was the son of Reverend Bernard John Ward and Isabella Frances Phillipps.1 He married, firstly, Gertrude Maria Chesterfield, daughter of Rowland W. Chesterfield and Gertrude Tyler, on 29 November 1860.1 He married, secondly, Charlotte Eugenia Smith, daughter of Samuel George Smith and Eugenia Chatfield, on 31 August 1869.1 He died on 18 November 1894 at age 67.1
