John Russell was born circa 1700.1 He was the son of Patrick Russell of Moncoffer and Catherine Campbell.1 He married, firstly, Marjory McIintosh circa 1721.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Calder, daughter of Sir Thomas Calder, 2nd Bt. and Christian Scott, in December 1739.1 He died on 3 May 1753.1
In 1740 he bought Rathen, Aberdeenshire.1 In 1752 he bought Blairmormond, Aberdeenshire.1
