     Sir Robert Stawell Ball was born on 1 July 1840.1 He was the son of Robert Ball and Amelia Gresley Hellicar.1 He married Frances Elizabeth Steele, daughter of William Edward Steele, on 5 August 1868.2 He died on 25 November 1913 at age 73.1
     Sir Robert Stawell Ball graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at King's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He graduated with a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.).1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Master of Arts (M.A.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1 He held the office of Astronomer Royal [Ireland] between 1874 and 1892.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.).1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Astronomical Society (F.R.A.S.).1 He was invested as a Knight in 1886.1 He was Director of the Cambridge Observatory between 1892 and 1913.1
