     Sir William Bruce, 1st Bt. was the son of William Bruce and Jane Fleming.1 He married, firstly, unknown daughter Middleton, daughter of General unknown Middleton.1 He married, secondly, Rachel Johnston, daughter of Joseph Johnston, before 1621.1 He died in February 1630.1
     Before 1603 he received the lands of Stenhouse from his grandfather, Sir Alexander Bruce of Airth.2 He was created 1st Baronet Bruce, of Stenhouse [Nova Scotia] on 29 September 1628, with special remainder to his heirs male.1
