     Sir James Robert Carmichael, 2nd Bt. was born on 11 June 1817.³ He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Sir James Carmichael Smyth, 1st Bt. and Harriet Morse.² He married Louisa Charlotte Butler, daughter of Sir Thomas Butler, 8th Bt. and Frances Clarke, on 18 February 1841.³ He died on 11 June 1883 at age 66.³
     Sir James Robert Carmichael, 2nd Bt. was baptised with the name of James Robert Carmichael Smyth.³ He gained the rank of Ensign in the service of the 86th Regiment.³ He held the position of 25th Chief of the Name and Arms of Carmichael on 4 March 1838.³ He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Carmichael Smyth [U.K., 1821] on 4 March 1838.³ He was resumed by Royal Licence on 25 February 1841.³ His name was legally changed to James Robert Carmichael by Royal Licence.³ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Kent.³
