     Sir James Robert Carmichael, 2nd Bt. was born on 11 June 1817.3 He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Sir James Carmichael Smyth, 1st Bt. and Harriet Morse.2 He married Louisa Charlotte Butler, daughter of Sir Thomas Butler, 8th Bt. and Frances Clarke, on 18 February 1841.3 He died on 11 June 1883 at age 66.3
     Sir James Robert Carmichael, 2nd Bt. was baptised with the name of James Robert Carmichael Smyth.3 He gained the rank of Ensign in the service of the 86th Regiment.3 He held the position of 25th Chief of the Name and Arms of Carmichael on 4 March 1838.3 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Carmichael Smyth [U.K., 1821] on 4 March 1838.3 He was resumed by Royal Licence on 25 February 1841.3 His name was legally changed to James Robert Carmichael by Royal Licence.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Kent.3
