     Sir John Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Cromarty was born circa 1656.1 He was the son of Sir George Mackenzie of Tarbat, 1st Earl of Cromarty and Anne Sinclair.1 He married, firstly, Lady Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of Charles Gordon, 1st Earl of Aboyne and Elizabeth Lyon, circa 10 January 1685.2,3 He and Lady Elizabeth Gordon were divorced on 28 July 1698.2 He married, secondly, Mary Murray, daughter of Patrick Murray, 3rd Baron Elibank and Anna Burnett, on 25 April 1701.2 He married, thirdly, Anne Fraser, daughter of Hugh Fraser, 9th Lord Lovat and Lady Amelia Murray, circa 23 October 1717.2 He died on 20 February 1730/31 at Castleleod, Scotland.1
     Sir John Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Cromarty held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Ross-shire [Scotland] in 1685, but didn't serve 'by reason his father was nobiliate.1' In April 1691 he was tried by the Court of Justiciary for the murder of Sieur de la Roche (killed in a tavern brawl in Leith), and was acquitted.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Macleod and Castlehaven [S., 1685] on 17 August 1714.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Tarbat [S., 1685] on 17 August 1714.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Cromarty [S., 1703] on 17 August 1714.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Tarbat [S., 1703] on 17 August 1714.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Macleod and Castlehaven [S., 1703] on 17 August 1714.1 In 1724 he became insolvent and his estates were sequestered.3

     Mary Murray was born on 28 August 1681.1 She was the daughter of Patrick Murray, 3rd Baron Elibank and Anna Burnett.1 She married Sir John Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Cromarty, son of Sir George Mackenzie of Tarbat, 1st Earl of Cromarty and Anne Sinclair, on 25 April 1701.1 She died before 1717.1
     From 25 April 1701, her married name became Mackenzie.1
