Henry James Tufton, 1st Baron Hothfield of Hothfield was born on 4 June 1844.2 He was the son of Sir Richard Tufton, 1st Bt. and Adelaide Amelie Lacour.2 He married Alice Harriot Argyll Clitherow, daughter of Reverend William James Stracey Clitherow, on 17 December 1872.2 He died on 29 October 1926 at age 82.2
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Tufton, of Hothfield, co. Kent [U.K., 1851] on 20 June 1871.2 He held the office of High Sheriff of Cumberland and Westmorland in 1874.2 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Cumberland and Westmorland.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Kent.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Cumberland and Westmorland.2 He was created 1st Baron Hothfield of Hothfield, co. Kent [U.K.] on 11 October 1881.2 He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting in 1886.2 He held the office of Mayor of Appleby between 1895 and 1896.2
