     James Allen was born on 9 September 1810.1 He was the son of William Allen and Mary Salt Law.1 He married Sarah Leslie, daughter of John Leslie and Catherine Mary Hyde, on 19 September 1845.1 He died on 9 May 1896 at age 85.1
     James Allen graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He was the Rector of Creagh, County Cork.1
