     John Moffat Hampton was born in 1852 at Ballytrue, County Armagh, Ireland.3 He was the son of John Hampton and Mary Ann Henderson.2 He married Ellen Jane Bennett, daughter of Henry Bennett and Margaret Bennett, on 26 January 1888 at St. Stephens Church, Ashburton, New Zealand.1,4 He died on 21 June 1931.3 He was buried at Ashburton Public Cemetery, Ashburton, New Zealand, plot 1499.3
     John immigrated to New Zealand, arriving on January 1875.4 He was a farmer in 1887 at Tinwald, Ashburton, New Zealand.5 He was member of the Ashburton A & P Committee at Ashburton, New Zealand.4 He was a farmer from 1899 to 1931 at Ballytrue Farm, Hinds, Canterbury, New Zealand.5,4 He held the office of Member of the Upper Ashburton Board.4 He was Chairman of the Hinds School Committee from 1901 to 1926 at Hinds, Canterbury, New Zealand.4
