Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien was born on 2 October 1814 at Ashlyn's Hall, Great Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England.2 He was the son of James Smith and Mary Isabella Pechell.2 He married Mary Ann Drever, daughter of Thomas Drever and Mary Dorrien, on 9 February 1845.2 He died in 1879.2
Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien was baptised with the name of Robert Algernon Smith.2 On 1845 his name was legally changed to Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien by Royal Licence.1
